Q: What's the difference between the Sticky Pods with 3
versus 4 suction cups?
A: My Sticky Pods and Dash Cams (3 suction cups) are
designed for lightweight consumer cameras (2 pounds or less). They are not as stable as
the Pro Pak and Original (4 suction cups). The Racer, ProPak and Original can handle
high speeds and heavy G-forces in turns. All this while creating better, more stable
video. The Racer, Original or ProPak is what you need for racing. Be sure to
add a Bogen 577 for more stable videos at high speeds.
If your camera setup (still, video or film) is greater than 8 pounds, you will need
the Sticky Pod Director to get the results you desire. Please know that the greater the
weight on the Sticky Pod, the more unstable it becomes as you drive, so you must support this
weight with multiple bases tied together. If you have a 5 pound camera, but want to drive
at highway speeds, you'll also need a Sticky Pod Director because the wind will batter your
camera so hard, the video will become unusable.
Q: What are the Sticky Pod dimensions?
A: Rectangle Base: 8 X 10 inches (20.3 X 25.4 cm)
Triangle Base: 8-1/2 X 9-1/2 inches (21.6 X 24.1 cm)
Suction Cups: 3-1/8 inches (when compressed ... 7.9 cm)
Add a total of 1 inch (2.5 cm) to all dimensions above to accomodate the suction cups. The
suction cups are mounted beyond the edges of the base plates.
Thread size of all screws is 1/4-20. This is the industry
standard throughout the world. The Director uses an industry standard 3/8 inch
bolt. Please keep in mind that the mounting bolt provided will fit 99% of all professional
video heads. However, you can substitute a metric bolt of appropriate size and strength to
accomodate some very rare video heads on the market. My advice, buy a new video head and
you won't have any troubles.
Q: How do I know if my camera has a mounting
socket?
A: Just look on the bottom of
the camera for a small threaded screw hole. If it's there, it is the right size. I
guarantee it. They are universal throughout the camera industry. If you're not sure
what it is, just click here to see a couple examples on my cameras.
Q: How long will the Sticky Pod® stay in
place?
A: If your Sticky Pod® is clean and the surface
is clean, it will hold on far longer than any video tape or memory stick. I have tested
the Sticky Pods™ endurance, attached to a stationary window, for over 18 months! I
routinely place Sticky Pods on my shop windows to ensure they can endure a variety of
environmental challenges for several weeks. You can place a Sticky Pod on the side of
your car and have it stay in place for several days, even while driving. In colder
weather, the Sticky Pod is an exceptional performer. While other suction cup camera
mounts have an implossible time gripping any surface, the Sticky Pod will maintain
it's grip for a very long time.
Q: Can I get a copy of the Sticky Pod instructions?
A: Yes, please visit ... Sticky Pod Instructions
Q: Can the Sticky Pod® stay in place during high
speed driving and cornering?
A: YES!! That's why I invented it in the first
place. It can withstand speeds up to 175MPH and I have never been able to shake it off
at any speed. As you can see, the good people at Tom's Hardware Guide take it for a
135MPH run down a California highway. The Sticky Pod endured many 1/4 mile drag runs on
high performance professional dragsters. These machines reached speeds as high as
175MPH and the owners of the track bought two Sticky Pods so they could make their own
videos. To my knowledge, the Sticky Pod is the only camera mount capable of handling these
high speeds on the exterior of a vehicle.
Q: Is the Sticky Pod® made out of
plastic?
A: Only the Mini, otherwise
the base is made from military grade aluminum that is laser cut for a precise fit and
function. The camera base (that's the little black square) is made out of thick heavy
steel. The extensions and the knuckles are made of solid aluminum. In other words,
the extensions are NOT hollow tubes. You can literally drive over them! Would you
trust your camera on the outside of a car if the Sticky Pod® was made out of cheap
plastic parts? Please have a look at the customer responses when they
received their Sticky Pods™. As you will see, they are very impressed.
Q: Will a Sony Z1, Canon XL-2 or a Panasonic DVX-100 fit on
a Sticky Pod®?
A: YES, or any other professional camera. We guarantee
that your Sticky Pod® will fit or your money back. We recommend you use a
Bogen 577 video quick release with your prosumer camera to provide a more stable
picture. This is an excellent piece for anyone, click here to be taken directly to it. The most common mount
socket of all, found on all consumer cameras and many professional cameras, is what the Sticky
Pod® uses. If your camera is a large professional video or film camera, such as
a Sony F900 or an ARRI film camera, we created the Sticky Pod Director to handle these large
movie cameras.
Q: How much weight can it carry?
A: As you will see on this
site, I have a 25 pound weight hold up for several days! Click here to see the video. All consumer and many professional hand held
cameras are well below 25 pounds. The Sticky Pod Knuckles can comfortably hold up to 8
pounds. If your camera weighs more than 8 pounds, then you will need the Sticky Pod
Director.
Q: Do I need to wet the suction cups?
A: NO! If you wet the suction cups, your Sticky
Pod® may slide off your car. These suction cups are NOT made from the cheap
vinyl or plastic you got out of a cereal box. These suction cups are custom made from
high quality synthetic rubber ingredients. The recipe is the secret behind the Sticky
Pods™ success. The suction cups can get wet and they will work very well in low impact
activities such as kayaking or surfing. If you place a barrier between the Sticky Pod
suction cup material and the adhering surface, it's the same as driving your car on black
ice.
Q: Will the suction cups damage a painted surface?
A: Only if you are neglectful. As long as the suction cups are
flawlessly clean, they will not damage a painted surface. However, if your suction cups
have some dust or dirt stuck to them and you try to push them into place, you will
scratch the paint. This question often comes up when someone wants video from a very
expensive car. My advice is if the owner of that expensive car is not willing to risk
getting a scratch on their car, then you should not use a Sticky Pod® on
that car. It would be better to attach the Sticky Pod® to a chase car.
Q: How do I remove the Sticky Pod?
A: While the Sticky Pod has an industrial stength grip, as
you know by now because you can't get it off your car, it is easy to remove. Simply
roll up the edge of the suction cup with your finger. Here, let me
show you in this short instructional video.
Q: How do I tether my Sticky Pod?
A: Every Sticky Pod model (except Mini) includes at least a
100lb safety tether. These tethers are required to be used for your safety and more
importantly the safety of those around you. Please ensure that you are securing your
camera and Sticky Pod to your vehicle at all times. To help you understand how to
tether your Sticky Pod, let me show you in this short
instructional video. I
love it! I need a Sticky Pod right now.
